Back by popular demand the Town Lake Relay Races are back.

The first three person relay race will take place July 21 at the Fiesta gardens put in. The race will start at 10:00am with a mandatory race briefing at 9:30 to explain the exchange procedures. Race entry fee will be $45.00 (Cash only) per team with 100% going back to the field (1st place 30%, 2nd 25%, 3rd 20%, 4th 15%, and 5th 5% of total purse).

Each team must include one hull in each catagory: USCA C-1, ICF K1 or Composite Surf Ski, and a Water Safari Solo Unlimited style hull. If you have any questions on boat specs please do not wait till race day to see where your hull fits. The above hull designations will be the starting order as listed.

Each team member will do a total of two laps. Each team member will do one lap (around I-35 then back down around Bird Island to Fiesta Gardens 3km), Tag their next division teammate, and then will be waiting to be tagged to do their second lap.

Warm up/cool down is limited to the mid of the lake or in the protected inlet downstream of put in/take out boat ramp.


The second race August 18 will be a different format where you will have to declare your hull(s) ahead of time as we will be choosing your teamates by random. Entry fees will then be raffled backed to ten lucky racers. More info to come as we work out the logistics on this new format.

This sounds like a great race and I'd like to be there but July 21 is the first group training date for the CR100 and there is a already a race on August 18 from Plum Park to LaGrange on August 18 to benefit the LaGrange Lions Club in conjunction with the State Aluminum race.

I just noticed the La Grange race on face book so I will be moving the second relay race to the 25th of August but I will have to stay with the July 18 for the first race. All other weekends busy with swim meets.

Due to the TCKRA Surf Ski Championships being held on the same day as the Relay we will not be allowing composite surf skis to enter our race and possibly dilute the field in Galveston. Also please note that a PRS Ski for this race will be considered a solo unlimited boat.

I like the concept. Just a thought, and clearly not applicable this late in the game for this year. Having a category for plastic solo might be a great way to suck some new folks into the mix. Sure there is going to be a wide range of performance in this category both with regard to the paddler and the boats but it might help pull some folks into race boats over time.
